The following are tips for choosing a safe, comfortable place to ride a bicycle:

  • Look for local parks, schools and churchyards.
  • Look for smooth riding surfaces with low traffic volume.
  • Look for quiet streets, or local bicycle paths.
  • Check with your local chamber of commerce for designated bicycle paths.
  • Check with local bicycle shops, and bicycle clubs for the best places to ride.

Riding in Traffic

The following are tips for riding in traffic:

  • Choose routes that have low traffic volume and smooth surfaces.
  • Always ride on the right hand side of the road. Ride with traffic.
  • Ride far enough from the curb to avoid parked cars, potholes, rocks, and rough travel surfaces.
  • Do not weave in and out of parked cars.
  • Know and obey traffic signs and signals.  This is the law.
  • Use hand signals to tell motorists and other bicyclists what you intend to do.
  • Follow lane markings.  Scan behind you before changing lanes.
