Members
A 5 member board appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by a majority of the City Council for 5 year terms.

Member Requirements
Membership of the board is composed of:
  • At least 1 but not more than 2 members of the Planning Commission who are not elected or appointed officials of the city
  • Not more than 2 persons holding elective or appointive salaried offices of the city
  • The remainder selected from citizens at-large
Board Powers
Chapter 9 of the Planning and Zoning Ordinance establishes the board and its duties. The board has the power to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged that there is error in the carrying out or enforcement of any provision of zoning ordinance. Hears and decides requests for interpretation of the district boundaries of the zoning map.

The board may grant variances to the strict application or requirement so as to relieve difficulties or hardships associated with exceptional topographic conditions and other exceptional situations, provided such relief may be granted without substantial detriment to the public good and without substantially impairing the intent and purpose of this zoning ordinance.
