|Board of Zoning Appeals|
A five-member (5) board appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by a majority of the City Council for five-year (5) terms. Membership of the board is composed of at least one but not more than tow members of the Planning Commission who are not elected or appointed officials of the city; not more than two persons holding elective or appointive salaried offices of the city; and the remainder selected from citizens at-large. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 11:00 AM in the Municipal Annex. Chapter 9 of the Planning and Zoning Ordinance establishes the board and its duties maintain city residency during the entire term of office.
The board has the power to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged that there is error in the carrying out or enforcement of any provision of zoning ordinance. Hears and decides requests for interpretation of the district boundaries of the zoning map. May grant variances to the strict application or requirement so as to relieve difficulties or hardships associated with exceptional topographic conditions and other exceptional situations, provided such relief may be g4ranted without substantial detriment to the public good and without substantially impairing the intent and purpose of this zoning ordinance.
