To be considered for employment, applicants must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, a high school or GED graduate, and be in compliance with all standards set forth by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standard & Training Commission. The selection process consists of competitive testing, including both a written test and a fitness assessment, an oral interview, and a thorough background investigation.
New officers receive 9 to 12 weeks of training at a police academy, followed by 16 weeks of on-the-job training under the supervision of an experienced field training officer. Following completion of field training, each officer is assigned to a patrol shift and must complete a 12-month probationary period.
