All candidates of the Reserve Officer Program shall comply with the following eligibility requirements for sworn law enforcement personnel:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a high school graduate or possess a General Education Development (GED) degree
- Not have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of "nolo condendere" to any violation of federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling,l liquor, or controlled substance
- Not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
- Pass a physical examination by a licensed physician, including a drug screen
- Have good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation
- Be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Applicants must be certified as meeting these criteria by a qualified professional in the psychological field
- Must comply with all other entrance requirements of the Bristol Tennessee Police Auxiliary
- Must pass an oral review board appointed by the Chief of Police or designee
- Must pass a final interview with the Chief of Police
- Upon selection, the participant shall begin a probationary period for a minimum of 12 months
- Must have been a member of the Bristol Tennessee Police Auxiliary for a minimum of 12 months preceding application, or be a graduate of a recognized Police Academy or be a certified police officer in Tennessee or another state or be an honorably retired police officer or former police officer who left service under honorable conditions or other persons as deemed qualified by the Chief of Police
- Reserve officer applicants will also be required to pass a physical fitness obstacle course prior to entering the Reserve Officer Program
