Facility Maintenance

The Parks and Facilities unit is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of all city parks and athletic facilities. Staff also maintains and provides custodial services to properties throughout the City. This includes:

  • Animal Shelter
  • Annex
  • Avoca Library
  • City Hall
  • Community Relations Offices
  • Fire Stations
  • Golf Shop
  • Nature Center
  • Slater Community Center
  • Transit Garage

This adds up to a total of 46 structures (185,290 square feet). This also includes 36 public restrooms that are serviced daily.

Maintaining Facilities & Grounds

Parks and Facilities provide all grounds keeping services for city parks and facilities. The 35 locations are serviced on a 7- to 10-day rotation. This covers approximately 253 acres. All decorative signage, trees and plantings are maintained as well.

Parks and Facilities crews provide year round service to:

  • 25 miles of wilderness trails
  • 3 stages
  • 52-acre lake
  • 7 basketball courts
  • 7 miles of paved/gravel walking trails
  • 7 soccer fields
  • 7 tennis courts
  • 10 bridges
  • 11 playgrounds
  • 12 baseball/softball fields
  • 12 rental shelters

Staff maintains over 1,500 paved parking spaces to include 5 parking lots (164 spaces) in the downtown area.

Community Events

Staff also provides set-up, staffing and tear-down for all community events. This includes:

  • 4th of July Celebrations
  • Border Bash
  • Downtown Center Music
  • Farmers Markets
  • Food City Race Night
  • Movies and Concerts in the Park
  • Rhythm and Roots Reunion
