[ARCHIVED] 06/05/17 Moving Day for second & third Appalachian Service Project Houses

On May 31, 2017, a house shell was moved from Bristol Motor Speedway to its final destination in the 300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.  On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, the other two house shells constructed by the Appalachian Service Project at the Bristol Motor Speedway will be moved to their final locations, both on Hill Street between 9th Street and 10th Street. In accordance with the TDOT-issued oversize haul permit, the first of these two oversize loads will depart the Dragway Entrance of Bristol Motor Speedway at 9:00 a.m. and proceed under police escort west on Highway 394; then north on Highway 11E and Volunteer Parkway to Hill Street/Holston Avenue (the traffic signal in front of Applebee’s); then west on Hill Street to be delivered to its final site. Once the first house is delivered, the house moving contractor will go back to Bristol Motor Speedway and deliver the second house shell back to this same block of Hill Street along this same route. Both of these loads are 24 feet wide and thus will considerably impact traffic, especially on northbound Highway 11E and Volunteer Parkway. It is anticipated that the second house shell will be clear of Volunteer Parkway by 4:00 p.m.

Hill Street between 9th Street and 10th Street will be closed to traffic while the two houses are backed up onto their respective foundation sites.  In order to haul these oversize loads along Hill Street, both sides of Hill Street from the Volunteer Parkway/Holston Avenue intersection to the 10th Street intersection will be signed as no-parking, tow-away zones, from 8:00 a.m. until the second house is delivered to its site, which should be before 5:00 p.m.  It is requested that the motoring public not park in these two blocks of Hill Street on Wednesday, June 7 after 8:00 a.m.

Motorists are cautioned that this oversize load will cause delays along this route and to take this into account when planning to travel along these roadways.

If heavy weather or other issues prevent both houses from being delivered to Hill Street on June 7, then the house moving will be completed on Thursday, June 8, 2017, using the same traffic plan.

Questions concerning this oversize load move should be directed to Captain Charlie Thomas of the Bristol Tennessee Police Department at (423) 989-5268.
