For the first time in 26 years a total solar eclipse will occur in our country, and it will darken the skies from Oregon to South Carolina. This rare occurrence will be viewable here in Bristol as well.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is organizing an event on Monday, August 21 in Steele Creek Park beginning at 2:00 p.m. The staff will have two sun scopes set-up along with a meteorite display. 200 pairs of eclipse glasses will be available, free of charge, while supplies last. In our area, the eclipse will peak at 2:37 pm EDT, when the moon will obscure 95 % of the sun.
In areas where the total eclipse takes place the sky will go dark for a few minutes, the temperature will drop, stars will appear, and the birds will become confused and begin singing their nighttime songs. “This will be an exciting opportunity to share a rare occurrence with friends in a unique setting.
