Each year, the Bristol Tennessee Police Department sets traffic safety goals and develops programs that combine enforcement strategies and education through the Tennessee Highway Safety Office in order to achieve them. Enforcement efforts are targeted toward locations identified as having a high number of collisions or other violations. For 2017, key measures included the ratio of accidents involving personal injury to the total number of collisions, as well as the overall collision rate.
The injury-to-collision ratio is measured over a five-year average, and was calculated at 19.3% for 2013-2017, coming in below the stated goal of 19.6%, and representing a smaller proportion of accidents in Bristol that resulted in personal injury. Contributing to this achievement were numbers of both personal injury accidents and persons injured in 2017 that both fell below the five-year average.
Additionally, the overall rate of traffic collisions is evaluated in comparison with the average over the three prior years, with a stated goal to maintain a rate below that average. 2017 saw 14% fewer collisions than average for that three-year period.
