Due to an incredible response from the community, the Bristol Tennessee Police Department’s Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) class is being moved to a larger venue. The class will take place on Wednesday, March 20, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. It will now take place in the Tennessee High School Auditorium.
The hour and a half course was developed by the ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) Center at Texas State University and is designed around the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy. The class talks through historical active shooter events and reinforces the topics with pictures and videos.
The avoid response teaches participants how to quickly identify an exit, and to get out of the area by any means. The deny response, to be used if the avoid strategy isn’t an option, teaches to block access, lock the doors and shut off the lights in the room you are occupying. The final strategy is to defend. This tactic is to be used only if the other strategies aren’t a choice. This last-ditch effort teaches to defend and fight the attacker at all cost.
The class is a great opportunity for individuals, businesses, churches, educators, and any other organizations who desire to learn how to react in an unthinkable situation.
“There has already been an incredible response to the CRASE class,” said Lt. Brian Hess with the Bristol Tennessee Police Department. “Due to the number of people who have RSVP’d, we changed the venue. We are now able to accommodate even more people. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, there is still plenty of time to do so”.
There is no cost to attend, but participants are asked to RSVP.
