The City of Bristol, Tennessee is currently accepting applications for Communiversity, an informational program that provides a behind-the-scenes look at local government and what it takes to run a city of 27,000 residents. The deadline to apply is Aug. 30.
The program is slated for Thursday evenings at 6 p.m., beginning on Sept. 12 and continuing through Oct. 24. Presentations will showcase the city mission and governance structure, finance, planning, codes, public works, police and fire departments, economic development, parks and recreation, and community relations.
City leaders will act as facilitators, showcasing a different department each week. Participants will learn in a fun and interactive environment and emerge with a better understanding of the programs and services that make Bristol such a good place to live. Communiversity is often used by those interested in serving on the City’s boards and commissions to develop a better understanding of city government, but is a valuable experience for anyone interested in participating.
“Communiversity is a fun and informal program that includes informational sessions and interactive activities,” said Community Relations Director Terrie Talbert. “We encourage participants to dress comfortably and come prepared to explore the unique functions of each department that, when put together, make our city operate effectively and efficiently.”
The program is free and open to individuals 18 and older who live, work, or own property in the City of Bristol, Tennessee. Sessions will be held at various locations throughout the City, beginning with a light dinner and concluding by 8:30 p.m. No class will be held on Oct. 17 so that participants can attend an annual dinner for members of the City’s boards and commissions to learn more about opportunities to serve. A graduation ceremony will be held during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Nov. 8.
