Community members are invited to have lunch with Bristol, Tennessee firefighters, climb inside the City’s state-of-the-art firefighting equipment, and enjoy games and prizes on Saturday, Oct. 12, during a Fire Station Open House commemorating Fire Prevention Week.
The event will be held at Fire Station 5, located at 1404 Highway 11W, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and activities have been planned with the entire community in mind.
Fire Prevention Week began in the 1920s to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1911. It is now celebrated nationwide to educate the public about small but important steps they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. This year the National Fire Protection Association has adopted “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” as its theme.
“We work with the public throughout the year to provide tips for preventing fires,” said Bristol, Tennessee Assistant Fire Chief David McGlamery. “Fire Prevention Week allows us to intensify those efforts as we invite community members into a fire station to see the equipment, meet members of the department, enjoy food and games, and learn more about the things we can all do to make our community safer.”
Planned children’s activities include an obstacle course and junior firefighter challenge, opportunities to dress like a firefighter, giveaways, and a chance to meet Sparky. Free hamburgers and hotdogs, station and equipment tours, and fire prevention information will be available for the entire family. Additionally, everyone who attends will be entered to win a Bristol gift basket, and firefighters will be available to conduct a car seat safety check to ensure child seats are properly installed in vehicles.
