BTPD to host civilian active shooter response class
Registration is currently under way for a 90-minute course offered by the Bristol, Tennessee Police Department to provide strategies and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter incident.
Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee High School Auditorium. The course will be taught by Lt. Brian Hess of the BTPD.
“We know from research and experience that hiding and playing dead are not always effective tactics for survival in an active shooter situation,” Hess said. “The material contained in this class is some of the best information available out there today. Should the unthinkable happen, it will save lives.”
The course was developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University and is now being used nationwide by schools, businesses, and community members. It uses the “Avoid, Deny, Defend” strategy to guide those who are confronted with an active shooter, helping them survive until police arrive.
