[ARCHIVED] Haynesfield Pool to remain closed this sumemr

Haynesfield Pool

Haynesfield Pool will remain closed this summer because of safety concerns resulting from broken pipes and crumbling concrete at the 59-year-old facility.

“We’ve made a number of repairs in recent years just to keep the pool in operation,” said Terry Napier, director of the Bristol Tennessee Department of Parks & Recreation. “The facility was built in the early 60s, and we know that many people in the Bristol community have fond memories of summer days at Haynesfield Pool. Unfortunately,  the pool has deteriorated significantly in recent years, and the time has come to close it. ”

Many of the pool’s in-ground lines are broken or clogged, hampering proper circulation, water quality, and visibility on the deep end of the pool, Napier said. Additionally, portions of the concrete walls are crumbling and some areas of the pool deck have cracked, causing an uneven surface that is a trip hazard. Water loss has become a major issue, too, he said, which indicates there may be a cavity under the pool. These issues combined have made it increasingly difficult to maintain a safe environment.

The City has completed an Aquatics Master Plan and continues to consider options for a new pool. A location has not been identified and no funding has been allocated for the project.
